Discuss: Deep Learning, AI, and Museums (4/8/16)
- Start with this great New Yorker article about whether AI is fundamentally dangerous to humanity
- Are AI personal assistants taking over journalism? They might be taking over your scheduling needs.
- Is deep learning and big data changing the way managers manage and teams work?
- As far as museums are concerned, museum professionals were addressing "engagement analytics" as Museums and the Web in 2014. Rob Stein, who pioneered a free-membership-for-useful-data program when he was Deputy Director of the Dallas Museum of Art, continues to address the issue in Medium and talks frequently about matching data with experience.
- If museums can apply deep learning to their collections and "sentiment analysis (links to a piece by The Met's Elena Villaespesa when she was at the Tate)," what other supposed "thinking positions" could be in danger?
Next step: museums will have to do a better job of tracking visitors through the museum, from entry to shops to exhibits, perhaps even to individual works of art, never mind to the museum's website. (You think the Cooper Hewitt pen is just for the benefit of visitors? And I don't mean that conspiratorially.)
